Obituary

It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Verlie Loretta Smith of South Brook, NL, age 66, announces her passing on November 23, 2022. She leaves to remember with beautiful memories, her daughters; Dana (Mik) Gortva, Heather Smith, Amanda Smith; grandchildren Ryan Pieters, Dylan Gortva, Tyson  Gortva, Chloee Gortva

Verlie is predeceased by her husband Robert 'Bob' Smith; parents William and Chrissie Dicks; brother Kevin Dicks.

On March 19, 1956, Verlie Loretta Smith was born in Springdale, Newfoundland to William and Chrissie Dicks. Verlie was one of two children.
Verlie worked as a bartender, waitress a local restaurant and was a cashier before moving to Ontario in 1990 and there she worked at Encore Sales for 20 years. She was a very hard-working loyal employee who gave her all when it come to working. At a very young age Verlie had he first baby girl Dana. Dana changed her life and made her grow up overnight, her mom and dad was amazing and help her every step of the way to help her raise her.
Verlie married her love her life Robert Smith on August 1, 1981. Verlie and Bob made a beautiful, combined family Dana and Heather with adding and perfect completion the youngest daughter Amanda. The Smith family was complete. Verlie accepted raised and loved Heather like her own Daughter. Verlie was a one-of-a-kind mother, grandmother, and special friend to all. She always had a smile, and everyone knew that she had a unique since of humour. She loved to play bingo, rummoli with her good friends, she enjoyed going out to South Brooks 50 plus club, and most of all she loved sitting on her porch relaxing.
Verlie's Grandson Ryan was the light of her life, while she lived in Ontario, she enjoyed her time with him and watching him grow up.. Verlie and bob with their sidekicks Ray and Nellie very rarely missed any of Ryan's hockey tournaments and was traveling all over watching him play….. so many amazing memories were made! Family meant a lot to Verlie she was daddy's little girl but sadly he passed in 1983, Verlie was blessed to have her mother as a big part of her live, Chrissie moved to Ontario with Verlie and lived with her and returned to Newfoundland and continued to live with her till sadly she passed away in 2014. Verlie and Bob was also a big part of her brother's life Kevin. Kevin's health declined and Verlie was there for her brother every step of the way until his passing in 2017.

Verlie loved her furry grand pups Amanda would always bring home " her dogs" but always turned out to be Verlie's pup. Jax will miss her more than anyone will understand.

Good Years Cove was Verlie's SPOT. She spent many hours and summer evenings relaxing, chatting, and catching up with people. She loved watching Mik and Dana fish whenever they came home Good Years was the place to go every evening.

The Celebration of Life Service was held from Calvary Pentecostal Tabernacle, South Brook, NL, on December 1, 2022, at 2:30 pm with Pastor Kerry Northcotte officiating. Inurnment was at the Pentecostal Cemetery, South Brook, NL. Urn bearer was Travis Pittman (Nephew). Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Harry Oxford of Green Bay Funeral Home, Springdale
