It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Sylvia Dora (Gould) Smith at the age of 90 on August 8, 2024 at the Miller Centre Palliative Care Unit, St. John's.

Sylvia's memory will be cherished by her children:, Anne Tremblett, Rose Locke, Claude (Judy) Smith, Glenda Bray, and Janice (Dwight) Oxford;
9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Betty Lou (Barry) Lane; brothers, William Gould and Ray (Jamie) Maher; brother-in-law, Ben Maynard; as well as a large number of nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by husband, Bennett Smith; son, Randy; parents, William and Annie (Spence) Gould; stepfather, Albin Maher.; sons-in-law, Bennett Locke and Jeffrey Bray;  sister-in-law, Denise Gould; great-grandchild, Declan Capay; sisters, Caroline Maynard and Grace Gashlard.  Brothers, Lloyd Maher and Lorne Maher.

Sylvia was born to William and Annie (Spence) Gould in Port Aux Choix NL.  In 1951 she married Bennett Smith and moved to Springdale, NL and spent the next 73 years dedicating her life to her family who were her greatest joy. Her faith and trust in God is how she lived her life.   A good book, playing the piano accordian, and knitting brought her hours of comfort and pleasure.
During 2020 mom made 18 blankets most of which were donated. In 2021 she moved to Lanes Retirement Home and within the last 5 months she made 5 afghans.

Our Mom was the heart of the home and embodied the best qualities of unconditional love, warmth, strength, humor, and generosity which extended to many family and friends who made their way to our front door and were always welcomed with a meal and a cup of tea.

Many thanks for the care provided by the staff at Lanes Retirement Home and the Miller Centre Palliative Care Unit.

Visitation will take place Sunday, August 11, 2024  from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Green Bay Funeral Home, 145 Cpl. S. Bouzane Blvd, Springdale, NL.

A funeral service will take place  Monday, August 12, 2024 at 1:00 pm from Green Bay Funeral Home, 145 Cpl. S. Bouzane Blvd, Springdale, NL with Pastor Lindsay Foster officiating.

The interment will take place at the Pentecostal Cemetery, Springdale, NL.

In lieu of flowers, and has expressions of sympathy, donations in her memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Green Bay Funeral Home, 145 Cpl. S. Bouzane Blvd, Springdale, NL.
