It is with great sadness that the family of the late Sylvia Phyllis Edison (nee Butt) of Springdale, NL, age 75, announces her passing, on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at the Green Bay Health Care Centre, Springdale.

Beauty is about what's inside us, loving who we are and nurturing that.

Life for Sylvia Phyllis Edison (Butt) started on July 3, 1942, but building the life that would give her joy and fulfillment really began on May 30, 1962, when she married the love of her life, Dexter.

From that day until April 11, 2019 when she succumbed to her second battle with cancer, Sylvia lived a life full of pride and commitment to her family - her biggest source of joy.

Nurturing, supporting, encouraging, and some would say even coddling, was what made her beam with that shy, warm smile. For her entire adult life but particularly since her retirement as a food services worker at Valley Vista, her days (and nights) were consumed with caring and comforting others.

Her children were blessed by her untiring dedication and caring; her grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren (to whom she was lovingly known as Nanny Dex) were smothered with healthy doses of affection, cuddles....and love, always love!

Joy came from loving and caring for others but Dexter, her husband and companion in life's journey, was the beneficiary of her kindness and caring more than any other. Supporting him, celebrating life with him, caring for him and making a home for them - all those expressions of her love was what made her days, right up to her last. Upon return to their cottage for recovery from surgery six months ago, Sylvia was visibly upset. The cause of her sadness was not over the battle and sickness she was about to face. She was concerned she wouldn't be capable of "looking after him". That selfless thinking is a symbol of a life fully lived and luckily she was still able to "look after him" right up to her final days - fixing a cup of tea for her husband was one of her final acts, nothing would have made her happier!

Yet her kindness and consideration for the comfort and well being of others was not limited to just her family. Her siblings and their extended families; her in laws; spouses who were welcomed to the family as her children grew and anyone who was blessed to have made her acquaintance were given an equal helping of respect and empathy.

It was because she lived such a simple life - a life filled with a multitude of good deeds and kind words - that her inner beauty and kind soul could blossom.

As she prepared for the inevitable end of her time here on earth, Sylvia (mom, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, wife and friend) was prompted for a few words about her life. She highlighted none of the possessions or things that some would deem important in life - she mentioned only her work, where she earned respect as a great co-worker; her marriage, which formed the basis for all the things to come and provide her a quality of life that gave her peace and contentment; and she noted flowers.

In her own words she noted, "no matter where she lived she had to ensure that she planted a flower".

Her care of flowers - planting, nurturing and even eventually mourning when they withered - is a symbol of how she cared for those around her. Supporting others to blossom and enjoy life gave her happiness.

The seeds she planted in this life will continue to blossom for generations - knowing that gave her cause to smile and be proud right to the end.

Sylvia is predeceased by her parents Bennett and Katie Butt, sisters Sadie (Lloyd) Edison and Shirley Giles; brother Wayne Butt; sister-in-law Cassie (Lloyd) Burt; and parents-in-law Tom and Beryl Edison.

She leaves to mourn her, husband Dexter Edison; daughter Trudy (Cluny) Randell; sons Randy (René) Edison, David (Lisa) Edison; grandchildren Wendy (Tim) Power, Alycia (Daniel Oxford) Edison, Emily Edison, Evan Randell (Crystal Clarke), Tiffany (Randy) Rideout, Jenna Budgell; great-grandchildren Brett Power, Blake Power, Kaitlyn Rideout, Zachery Rideout, Ryder Fallon, Riley Fallon; sister Sheila Saunders; brothers Maybin (Jean) Butt, Bruce (Betty) Butt; sister-in-law Maisie Butt; as well as many other family members and friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Ever Loved, Ever Remembered - Gone But Not Forgotten. "You Never Lose Someone Who Lives In Your Heart!"

The Celebration of Life Service was held from Green Bay Funeral Home, Springdale, on Monday, April 15, 2019 at 10:00 am with Robert Knight officiating. Interment was at the United Church Cemetery, Rattling Brook. Pallbearers were grandchildren Evan Randell, Tiffany Rideout, Tim Power, Blake Power, Daniel Oxford; nephew Dennis Saunders. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Elaine M. Rideout and Harry Oxford of Green Bay Funeral Home, Springdale.
