It is with great sadness that the family of the late Phyllis Florence Saunders (nee Harris) of Springdale, NL, age 71, announces her passing on Saturday, January 20, 2018 in Zephyrhills, FL.

Phyllis Harris was born in St. John's and grew up living on Springdale Street with her parents Baxter and Florence, and brothers Lester, Don and Frank. She had many fond memories of the summers she spent with her cousin Doris in Adeytown and they developed a sister like bond.

She went on to become an X-Ray Technician, and this led her to a job in Springdale Cottage Hospital. In Springdale she met the love of her life, Donald Saunders. They were married Aug 3, 1968, and remained in Springdale. Ten years later they were blessed with their son Brian, whom she loved dearly. She devoted herself to being a mother, enjoyed being an active member of the community and loved her years as a leader for both Beavers and Cubs. She enjoyed Home League, Bible Study, Ladies Prayer and Outreach Group and many other community events. After her victorious battle against cancer, she became a proud participant in Relay for Life.

When she retired from work, her and Don began spending their winters together in Florida, and have been there every year since 2008. It was there she continued to participate in Bible study and many other events. She would often be seen going around the park on her 3 wheel bicycle, and developed many more friendships that she valued deeply. The annual "Canada Day" parade was one of her favourite things to be part of.

She loved spending time with her family, and this included her large extended family in Springdale, as well as many trips to St. John's to visit her son and his wife Jennifer. When in St. John's, she would always make time to see her brothers, sisters-in-laws and their children. In later years, she was very fond of being able to speak with her multiple friends and family that were living away via FaceTime on her iPad; family meant a lot to her.

Phyllis was a devoted wife and mother, and a beloved member of the community. She has many friends and family members who are left to remember her kind and caring ways. The memory of her laughter and love will bring smiles to our faces, and she will live on in our hearts. We are all better for knowing her.

Phyllis is predeceased by her parents Baxter and Florence Harris; brothers Don Harris, Frank Harris; stepbrother Lester Butler; parents-in-law Arthur and Mary Saunders; sister-in-law Jean Saunders; brothers-in-law Robert Saunders, Paul Saunders.

She leaves to remember the wonderful life that she lived, her husband Donald Saunders; son Brian (Jennifer) Saunders; special cousin Doris (Cecil) Hiscock; sisters-in-law Edna Harris, Kay Butler, Judy Noseworthy,  Barbara (James) Dalley, Ruby (Victor) Kelly, Gladys (Clyde) Dove, Joy (Shawn) Weir; brothers-in-law David (Ruby) Saunders, Wayne (Nina) Saunders, Kevin (Rosemary) Saunders, Boyd (Colleen) Saunders, Byron (Ada) Saunders, Dennis Saunders (Marian Radomirov); as well as many other extended family members and friends.

The Promotion to Glory service was held from The Salvation Army, Springdale, on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at 11:00 am with Majors Wycliffe and Shirley Reid officiating. Interment was at The Salvation Army Cemetery, Cherry Crescent, Springdale. The pallbearers were brothers-in-law David Saunders, Wayne Saunders, Kevin Saunders, Boyd Saunders, Byron Saunders, Dennis Saunders. Funeral Arrangements were entrusted to Elaine M. Rideout and Harry Oxford at Green Bay Funeral Home, Springdale.
