Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Phoebe May Tucker (Downton), age 85, of Springdale, NL announces her passing on Friday, March 03, 2017 from the Valley Vista Senior Citizens Complex, Springdale.

Phoebe May Tucker (Downton) was born on February 18, 1932 to Edward and Mary Ann Downton of Barr'd Islands, Fogo Island.

Upon completing high school, Phoebe attended Prince of Wales College in St. John's, where she completed summer school to become a teacher. Her teaching assignments took her to classrooms in Porterville, Little Bay Islands and Bunyan's Cove. However, it was Little Bay Islands where she chose to put down roots. On December 7, 1956, she married Raymond Tucker of Little Bay Islands and together they raised two children – Daphne and Rex.

Following the arrival of her children, Phoebe finished teaching to focus on life at home. She also committed much of her time to the United Church of Canada as a Lifetime Member of the United Church Women (UCW) as well as Sunday school teacher, choir member, treasurer and volunteer on a number of other church boards. Phoebe was a lifetime member of the Green Bay Auxiliary (Little Bay Islands and Springdale) and extensively involved in the Lodges of the Ladies' Orange Benevolent Association (L.O.B.A.).

In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking and baking and was famous for her turkey neck soup, dark and light fruit cakes and beet salad. In later years, she enjoyed watching TV game shows like Jeopardy, reading and listening to gospel and Christmas music.

Phoebe is predeceased by parents Edward and Mary Ann Downton and husband Raymond Tucker.

She leaves to mourn her daughter Daphne Earle (Barry), son Rex Tucker (Marcela), granddaughter Leslie Earle, sister Violet Payne (Lewis), brother Edward Downton (Joan), sisters-in-law Doris Tucker (Ray Flynn) and Marie Tucker and brother-in-law George Tucker (Rose).
