Matthew George
Henstridge
Jan 28, 1928 — Sep 6, 2024
Triton
The family of Matthew (Matt) George Henstridge is saddened to announce his passing on September 6, 2024 at the age of 96.
Matthew is predeceased by his parents, George and Annie, and was the last of his 5 sisters and 5 brothers. He lost his loving wife, Doris, in 2004 after 57 years of marriage; his daughter, Marion, in 1985; granddaughter, Shauna Colbourne in 1972, and daughter-in-law Roxanne (Monty), 2002.
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his children Marilyn Colbourne (Eric), Golda Fox Murphy (Gerry), Minetta Meuse (Peter), Brian Henstridge (Helen), Ruth Tucker (Perry), Rudy Henstridge (Karen), Cindy Beaton (Wayne), Kerry Henstridge (Manon), Larry Henstridge (Barbara), Rocky Henstridge (Gale), and Monty Henstridge (Janice) as well as 23 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Matthew will be remembered for his love of family and his devotion to his wife Doris who he nursed with loving care for the last 10 years of her life. He provided well for his large family beginning as a logging camp cook, then carpenter and eventually construction contractor. Probably his proudest building achievement was the construction of 11 churches in NL, NS and AB. Despite limited formal education he was a very intelligent man, an avid reader, who was able to help his children with high school math and always curious to learn new things. Matt was a confident and resourceful man who loved a challenge and could usually find a solution to any problem he encountered. His willingness to take risks and learn new skills served him well in life and work. He was a dedicated and devoted Christian who passed his values along to his children.
The family cabin at 'The Brook' brought him great pleasure in his later years. He enjoyed cooking telling stories and spending quality time with the family as they met there every summer. Matt will leave a great void in the lives of his family and friends, but also many wonderful memories.
A Celebration of life will be held at the Maranatha Pentecostal Church (built by Matthew), Triton on Tuesday September 10, 2024 at 1pm. Interment at Evergreen Interfaith Cemetery, Triton, NL.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Valley Vista and Kingsway Living Springdale with special thanks to the manager Tara Mitchell – Patey, who went above and beyond for him and a very special thanks to GFW Long Term Care Facility for their amazing thoughtfulness, care and kindness in his final days.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Green Bay Funeral Home, Springdale, NL.
