Springdale

Obituary

It is with sadness that the family of the late Marie Ruby Oxford of Springdale, NL, announces her passing at the Valley Vista Seniors Complex, Springdale, NL, aged 88 years.

Marie leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her son, Barry (Dorothy) Oxford; grandchildren, Megan (Jeff) Blair, & Leslie (Chris) Hanlon; great-grandchild, Reid Hanlon; Michael Croucher whom she always saw as a second son; sisters, Waverley James, & Georgina (Lloyd) Critch; brother, Kenneth (Julia) James.

Marie is predeceased by her husband, Pearce; an infant son and daughter; her parents, Parmeanus & Gertie James; 'adopted' parents, Allen & Pearl James; brother, Wilbert James; sister, Elsie (Roy) Williams.

Marie was born and raised in Little Bay Islands, NL. In the 1950s, she moved to Springdale to work at the newly opened Springdale Cottage Hospital. There she met and married Pearce Oxford and raised their son, Barry. In later years, she worked at Valley Vista Senior's Home up until her retirement.

Marie often spoke of the hospital calling to ask her to bring home newborn babies while their mothers were hospitalized. She had up to 3 at one point, which was quite busy, but she was very willing to give them the care they needed. She was Aunt Marie to many who knew her, whether they were related or not. Marie also took great joy in her garden, planting trees, flowers and growing strawberries. She loved the outdoors and sunshine which led to many summers spent in campgrounds around the island, making friends along the way. She was also a talented crafter whether sewing, quilting, knitting or crocheting. Her family and friends enjoy and cherish the many things she created for them.

Marie's greatest love, however, was her family. She was so proud of their son Barry and their two granddaughters, Megan and Leslie. The girls have fond memories of learning to bake, sew and knit at her house, as well as many summer camping trips. Her great-grandson, Reid, delighted her and brought her such joy.

The family would like to thank Dr. Todd Young, and the staff at Springdale Retirement Centre, Green Bay Health Centre and Valley Vista Long Term Care Centre. Your kindness and compassion is very much appreciated
