Guy Neal
Batstone
Feb 7, 1928 — May 30, 2021
Jackson's Cove, NL
It is with great sadness but with a glorious hope that the family of the late Guy Neal Batstone of Jackson's Cove, NL, age 93, announces his Promotion to Glory on Sunday, May 30, 2021 at the Green Bay Health Care Centre, Springdale.
Guy was born in Jackson's Cove, NL, on February 7, 1928, to Ambrose (Brose) and Maggie Batstone. He completed his education at the local school in Jackson's Cove.
He met Ruby Sarah Matthews of King's Point and in 1958 they were married and later started a business together, known as "Batstones Grocery".
Like many Newfoundlanders of the day, he was a "Jack of All trades but the Master of None". Between his school days to his retirement days, he wore many " hats ", including hauling mail by dog team, hauling freight and passengers by snowmobile, road building and snow clearing for the highways. He spent some time away from home in various places such as Grand Falls, Corner Brook, and Toronto doing different types of employment.
The call of the Sea was always there, so he went back to the boat and into the fishery. Guy worked a short time on the fishing trawlers on the Grand Banks but most of his fishing days were the inshore fishery. He retired from the inshore fishery in 1992.
Guy was an avid hunter and there was usually moose, rabbit, seal or turrs, in season, for Ruby to prepare a traditional meal. He liked to travel along with his wife Ruby. They made various trips to many different places such as Florida, sometimes in company with his brother Don and sister-in-law Pat.
Guy was known by many to lend a helping hand when he could. He will be missed but never forgotten by his family and friends.
He was predeceased by his wife Ruby Batstone; parents Ambrose and Maggie Batstone; brother Glenn Batstone; sisters-in-law Daphne Batstone, Delores Batstone.
Guy leaves to mourn his brothers Donald (Pat) Batstone, Harold (Joy) Batstone; sisters-in-law Geneva Matthews, Annie Matthews, Mary Batstone; nieces and nephews, as well as other family members and friends.
He will be Forever Loved, Forever Remembered - Gone But Not Forgotten – Forever In Our hearts!
The Celebration of life service was held from The Salvation Army, Harry's Harbour, on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at 1:00 pm with Major Gerald Lacey officiating. Interment was at the Community Cemetery, Jackson's Cove. The pallbearers were nephew and niece Barry and Sandra Matthews; niece Leslie Batstone; friends Fred Rowsell, Ross Osmond, David Saunders. Funeral Arrangements were entrusted to Elaine M. Rideout and Harry Oxford of Green Bay Funeral Home, Springdale.
