It is with great sadness that the family of the late Edna Levina Young (nee Bennett), age 90, of Beachside, NL announces her passing on January 29, 2017 from the Valley Vista Senior Citizens Complex, Springdale, NL.
Edna Levina (Bennett) Young was born in Ward's Harbour, NL on February 24th, 1926, the eldest daughter of Gordon and Elsie Bennett. She had nine brothers and four sisters and the family moved to Beachside in 1943.
She left her education early in order to help support her family. She was out in service with the Strong family of Little Bay Islands followed by the Batstone family of Silverdale. Edna was known for her work ethic, her kindness, loving nature and contagious smile.
Edna met the love of her life and future husband, Ward Young of Beachside (Wild Bight) on a visit when she was 12 years old. For Ward it was love at first sight and they finally married on September 29th, 1948. For 68 years they were totally devoted to each other always demonstrating their affection openly with kisses, hugs and smiles. Together they raised a family of five sons and four daughters– Joan, Eugene, Bert, Keith, June, Judy, Jefford, Paul and Janice. Another daughter, Viola Joy, passed away after only twenty-one days. She worked hard caring for the family while Ward spent long periods away in the logging camps and at mining sites. Her days were filled with drying fish, making hay, caring for livestock and tending the garden. She was known for her wonderful cooking and hospitality where there was always a spot at the table for an unexpected visitor. Her children were encouraged to get a good education and she made sure the children went to school and homework was completed. The extended family, which includes seventeen grandchildren and thirty-three great grandchildren were loved and cherished.
Edna loved to spend time knitting, quilting, camping and travelling. In her golden years she travelled widely in Europe, South Africa and the United States, including Hawaii. But nothing gave her greater pleasure than being in the company of her large extended family.
She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday January 29th, 2017 at 3:15 pm. She will be dearly missed by her family and all those that knew and loved her. We all look forward to that great reunion day.
