Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Duncan William Parsons Sr., of Springdale, NL, age 90, announces his passing on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at the Valley Vista Senior Citizens Complex, Springdale.

Duncan was born on Aug 11, 1930 to Pastor Robert and Alice Parsons on Little Bay Island. He was the 5 th son of 10 children. In 1950 he married Dorothy Colbourne and together they had 5 sons and 1 daughter.

Duncan and Dorothy led a very active life right into their Golden years and until Dorothy's passing on Jan 25, 2018. From the time of her passing Duncan was ready to join her and now he has.

With a grade 6 education Duncan quit school to work in the woods to help support his parents and family. As a young man his first business adventure was a small log cutting operation in Boot Harbour. In the late 50's, with three small children, he moved to Stephenville to work on the American Base. It was here he learned his skill as a Sheet Metal Mechanic and started a small plumbing and heating business with his brother Burt.

In the early 60's he moved his family, now with 5 children, back to Grand Falls Windsor and with his brother Burt, started Central Plumbing and Heating. In the early 70's he moved his family, now with 6 children to Springdale where he started Springdale Plumbing and Heating.

Although Duncan worked as a Sheet Metal Mechanic until his retirement, he had several other business ventures weaved throughout the years.

When the nest was empty Duncan and Dorothy moved to Ottawa, where he continued to work as a Sheet Metal Mechanic, and it was during this time he wrote and acquired his Certificate as a Journeyman Sheet Metal Mechanic. He was extremely proud of such an accomplishment considering he had to leave school while attending grade 6.

Some of Duncan's other ventures included owning and operating a Studebaker car dealership with his brother Burt, operating a Sport Tuna Fishing Charter Business. He was a hunting guide and guided for many American hunters on trips to Kippen's Ridge. He also operated a Coca-Cola Distributorship for the Green Bay Area and he was a sub-dealer in Springdale for Sweeney's Pontiac and Buick. He worked at IOC in Labrador City and on the construction site for the Come By Chance Oil Refinery.

Duncan loved nature and enjoyed spending his time outdoors. He loved to golf, hunt, fish, snare rabbits, snowmobiling, boating and spending time at his cabin with family and friends. He and Dorothy loved to travel.

Duncan loved to attend church regularly and most of all he was extremely proud of his children. His biggest accomplishment in life was to provide for his family and leave his legacy of faith to guide them.

Duncan is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Parsons; parents Robert and Alice Parsons; son Dennis Parsons; grandson David Janes; brothers Eliel Parsons, Ralph Parsons, Harold Parsons, Hubert Parsons; infant brothers Fred Parsons, Alfred Parsons; infant sister Pearl Parsons.
