Obituary

It is with sadness that the family of the late Donald Whelan, age 72 of Pilley''s Island, NL announces his passing on October 31, 2013 . Don was born in Pilley's Island to James and Nellie Whelan on July 29,1941. He is pre-deceased by the love of his life, Donna; parents James & Nellie; brother Byron; sister Rita. He leaves to mourn son Shawn (Melissa); daughters Sue (Clyde) Fudge, Wavey (Brian) Squires, Wendy (Greg) Read, Nicole (Peter) Fudge; Grandchildren Chad, April, Jake, Breagh, Michaela, Sarah, Gillian, Synjin, Darien, & Meghan; Great-Grandchildren K''Dyn, Kody, Karley, & Hawksley; brothers Edmond (Joan), Kenneth (Christine); sisters Margaret (Bill) Wyatt, Audrey (Dan) Peddle. Don was known to family and friends as "Skipper". He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and a special friend to all who knew him. He was a hard working man, who started in the woods at the age of 14, with his brothers by his side. He continued his work to provide for his family for 40 years. He made many friends along the way that were never forgotten. Some of his favorite times were spent at the camp with family and friends enjoying a good drink and a game of cards.Don and Donna, the love of his life, had a warm and loving home that was open to everyone for tea, maybe a lunch and always a good chat. Their love was forever and our memories of them in our hearts will never be forgotten! Another light gone from Whelan''s Lane...another one in Heaven!
The Celebration of Life service was held from The Salvation Army, Pilley's Island, NL on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 with Major Lindsay Oxford officiating. Interment was at The Salvation Army Cemetery Pilley's Island, NL. The pallbearers were: Shawn Whelan(son),Synjin Fudge(grandson),sons-in-law Peter Fudge,Clyde Fudge,Brian Squires and Greg Read,brothers Edmund and Kenneth Whelan. Funeral Arrangement were entrusted to Gail Hancock & Harry Oxford of Green Bay Funeral Home, Springdale, NL.
